The Johnson Creek Historical Society sponsored the Johnson Creek 5th Graders on a trip to the Civil War Encampment at the "Wade House" in Greenbush, WI offered by the State Historical Society. There were 41 children who attended and 7 adults. Mr. Brockert and Mr. Wagner were the 5th Grade Teachers who we worked with. Hopefully this will be offered again next year, and we can sponsor next years 5th graders.

The first station the kids attended was the Undertaker.

Learning how to set up camp. The students were in groups of 3 or 4 and leaned how set their tent up, which consisted of 2 section of canvas about 2 yards square. One of the squares had buttons along one edge, and the other had button holes on one edge.
Button them up and find some branches to brace your tent up. This could be a two man tent or up to seven men.

Provo-Marshall. He punished any traders or runners by branding their faces or locking them in a sweat box, among other things

We learned about the different uniforms that were worn during the war. On the right is a navy uniform.

Visiting a Southern camp, learning what food they had to eat and how they took care of the animals and themselves.

Learning about the types of weapons  the North & the South used. The kids were able to touch the weapons and also there was a cavalry unit that rode in and showed off their horses.

The Blacksmith would follow behind the lines and sometimes had to go into battle to fix a cannon that was damaged. Many of these professionals were private and followed behind the battle scenes and were paid privately by individual soldiers or by the government they were fighting for and were not soldiers.
