  • Feather Trees are an early form of artificial Christmas tree originally created in Germany in the 19th century because of concerns about deforestation. .
  • The trees were designed to look like the white pines of the German forestland.
  • They are created by wrapping specially prepared and often dyed goose feathers around a stiff wire form to become the branches of the tree.
  • They have quite a bit of space between their branches and are excellent for showing off ornaments.
  • Many of the early feather trees brought by the German Immigrants were tabletop trees.
  • The first feather trees came to the U.S. in 1913, in the Sears, Roebuck and Company catalog.
